ABOUT NHF
New Horizon International Foundation was born from a simple conviction: talent and potential exist everywhere, but access to opportunity does not. NHF’s story begins with the life of its founder, Erve Joseph, and with a generation of resilient young Haitians whose determination to rebuild inspired a larger vision.
Sometimes changing a life does not begin with changing everything. It begins with someone opening a door.
WHY I STARTED NHF
Someone once created an opportunity for me.
I know personally how much a single opportunity can change the direction of a life. I grew up in an orphanage in Haiti and was born with club feet. As a child, people helped make it possible for me to travel to the United States for corrective surgery. That would not be the last time others opened a door for me. When I pursued higher education, people welcomed me into their homes and gave me places to live while I attended college. I raised funds to help pay for my education, and individuals chose to invest in my future. None of those opportunities guaranteed what I would do with my life. But they gave me the chance to do something with it.

Then I watched another generation face the loss of almost everything familiar.
Years later, the orphanage where I grew up was overtaken amid Haiti’s gang violence. Young adults connected to its English-language school were scattered across Haiti, and several made the difficult journey to Southern Haiti near my hometown of Les Cayes. But what struck me most was not what they had lost. It was what they did with what remained. They started again—relying on skills, relationships, creativity, and extraordinary determination to move forward. They did not lack potential. They needed pathways through which that potential could become opportunity.
Potential can exist almost anywhere. Opportunity does not.
Someone once opened those doors for me.
People I did not owe anything to chose to invest in my future. Their generosity gave me opportunities to receive medical care, pursue an education, find places to live while attending college, and continue moving forward. Today, I have the opportunity to do the same for someone else.
